To use software like Mathworks SIMULINK, we may need 64 bit operating system like Windows 7 or Windows Vista 64 bit to speed up processing. A computer with DVD +/- RW will work for most people but, Blu-Ray drives are preferable to get an undated technology. It is recommend buying a separate standalone Blu-Ray disc player rather than a Computer drive which also increase your Disc Drive life as it is very costly.

With the increase in Electronic Data storage needs, technology of hard disk made it possible to store huge data on computer hard drives. However, for home use, anything above 320 GB hard disk space would work fine. Whenever extra storage is required buying another hard drive or buying an external hard drive is the best option. Amount of RAM also depends on our computing need. For advanced computing, 4 GB of RAM will be enough to perform tasks efficiently. However, you can expand its RAM in future. It is recommended to select RAM speed above 800 MHz for better performance.

You can also select a HD graphics card (High Definition). The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD is also a good graphics card for High Definition needs. If you plan to use computer primarily as a Media Center by connecting surround sound home theatre speakers, we can choose a sound card with either 5.1 Channel or 7.1 Channel output. For a Desktop, usually a monitor with dimensions above 19" will provide a satisfactory display.

Most of the manufacturers let us choose additional peripherals and accessories that go well with your computer. However, these are generally expensive if bought from the manufacturer. You can find good deals on wired or wireless mouse, keyboard, headphones, laptop bags and web cams online. Most computer manufacturers provide 30 day trials of Anti Virus software along with computers but it is a good idea to download and try the trial versions of various antivirus software tools one after the other and see which one does not reduce your computing speed.
