Payment Services Take Businesses Up A Notch

By:

Technological breakthroughs have brought people together like never before. In an instant you can send a message or video chat with someone halfway around the world. When it comes to running a small business, keeping up with the times and establishing a web presence are essential steps forward. As part of this move, it is also important to develop a payment processing system that attracts and keeps customers online in addition to boosting face-to-face sales success.

The concept of credit has existed for some time, albeit on a much small scale. Mom-and-Pop general stores, for example, would sometimes allow their customers to take goods home one day and then pay for them days or even weeks later. These agreements were often based on a simple signature or a verbal promise. Urbanization and a growing population, however, have made it far less likely that you personally know the people you are buying from. As a result, third party payment processors have emerged, filling the need for credit modern societies. In the past two decades or so, it has also become clear that paying with a card is much more convenient than carrying around cash.

Large companies and corporations have had the capacity to take cards for years, whereas many small businesses are just now getting on board. Some of the merchant reluctance to work with payment processors has stemmed from concerns that it would be unnecessarily expensive or inconvenient. Recent developments, however, have proven the opposite to be true. Merchants do have to pay a monthly fee and relinquish a percentage of each transaction, but this has to be seen in the context of increased sales. Folks in growing numbers are opting to stick with plastic. And, on the internet, the vast majority of transactions involve the exchange of card numbers alone. Thus, making it easier to pay allows you to attract new customers and clients.

As for convenience, doing business via credit and debit cards has a number of advantages over taking cash only. First, just as people will be able to buy more easily from you, your business can pay for the products it needs without the hassle of counting bills and coins. Accounting becomes more straightforward when you have monthly summaries as part of your payment processing arrangement. Moreover, with Wi-Fi spots and mobile internet popping up everywhere, you can follow your accounts online whether or not you are close to the store or home office.

There are additional benefits associated with payment services as well. A few of them are more difficult to quantify, but they are certainly real. For instance, when you handle less cash in your storefront, you enhance security by making the place a less attractive target for burglars. This also eliminates the annoying task of counting out germ-covered dollar bills and coins, just as it reduces the number of in-person visits you will have to make to the bank. Finally, the simple step of posting well-known credit logos on your website or in your window instills confidence in visitors, hopefully turning them into first-time customers.
