Paying For Plastic Surgery: Insurance, Payment Plans, Loans, Or Cash

By:

Plastic surgery can easily cost thousands of dollars, and as an elective procedure, it is not usually covered by health insurance. As a result, most patients must pay for this procedure themselves. Thankfully, there are several options available for covering the costs of plastic surgery. Begin by determining the total cost of the procedure you are considering, and then investigate your payment options.

Most patients choose to finance their procedure through the surgeons office. Plastic surgeons are often able to work out a payment plan with patients, accepting monthly payments in lieu of one large upfront payment. These financing options are often offered by large practices able to run their own financing. Some even accept major credit cards. However, keep in mind that a large down payment may be required. Ask your chosen surgeon if such payment programs are available.

If payment plans are unavailable, most cosmetic surgery patients must save up money to pay for the procedure upfront, or take out a personal medical loan through a bank. Your ability to obtain a loan will depend on the same criteria used to decide other loans, such as a car loan, so not all patients will qualify. Although some who undergo plastic surgery are wealthy and able to pay for the procedure with cash, others will need to save up for years to be able to afford it.

Health insurance may, in rare cases, cover plastic surgery. For example, reconstructive breast surgery after a mastectomy is usually covered by health insurance. So is rhinoplasty to correct a deviated septum or other condition that may cause sleep apnea. An eyelift is not usually covered, but if drooping eyelids are obscuring a patients vision, the insurance company may pay for the procedure. However, if you are undergoing plastic surgery for purely cosmetic reasons, do not expect your insurance to cover the costs.
