Most people are barely scraping by when it comes to being able to afford driving a car. Some have opted for public transportation, even more have joined carpools. Reducing the cost of fuel will surely help the pocketbook but there is much more to consider.

While these options might save on fuel consumption, there are still other costs associated with driving and owning a car, such as insurance. Essentially, auto insurance indicates a monthly bill, regardless of the time that is spent on driving.

A lot of insurance agencies are considering new insurance plans. Various states are experimenting with a new insurance plan called pay per mile auto insurance.

The premiums for this kind of insurance would be based on how much many miles that you drive. A plan such as this would stand to benefit drivers and insurance companies alike. No more full coverage rates when you are one that drives less.

These drivers would be able to have additional power over the costs associated with their car insurance plans. Discounting the costs for people who use other forms of transportation is good news to the ears of many. The benefits are great for all involved.

How would the number of miles that a driver travels be calculated? They have to protect themselves against scammers that will try to manipulate the system.

It is still in the beginning stage however, one idea is the use of a permanent odometer placed in the car by the insurance company that keeps track of your miles and submits those figures to the insurance company or something similar such as a GPS device.

The less that a driver uses their vehicle, the lower their premiums or payments will be. Drivers that can keep their travel miles at under 15,000 would stand to see the biggest savings.

This is a wonderful arrangement for people that are using public transport or that have reduced the number of miles that they drive. But, the plan is just offered in Arizona, Indiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
