Paxil Warning Strengthened By Fda Because Of Paxil Birth Defects

The United States Food and Drug Administration recently strengthened its warning concern Paxil. This warning stems from a study done by the manufacture of Paxil, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which found that Paxil can potentially cause birth defects such as Paxil Cleft Lip in babies whose mothers took Paxil while Pregnant.

The FDA released this warning stating: Healthcare professionals are advised to carefully weigh the potential risks and benefits of using Paxil in women during pregnancy and to discuss these findings as well as treatment alternatives with their patients."

The study in question was done by GSK which looked into women who took antidepressants (including Paxil), while pregnant and the birth defects (if any) that followed. The results of the study showed that Paxil was linked to twice as many birth defects than any other antidepressant according to the FDA.

This study has also caused GSK to change the warnings on its official website for Paxil, as one warning states: "Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant as there is a potential risk to the fetus with Paxil. Some studies of Paxil in pregnant women have suggested a possible increased risk of malformations, while others have not shown such a risk. The official website goes on to say as well: "Babies born to mothers who have taken antidepressants, including SSRIs such as Paxil, in the third trimester of pregnancy have reported complications, including difficulties with breathing, turning blue, seizures, changing body temperature, feeding problems, vomiting, low blood sugar, floppiness, stiffness, tremor, shakiness, irritability or constant crying. Tube feeding, help with breathing and longer hospitalization may be needed. There have also been reports of premature births in pregnant women exposed to SSRIs, including Paxil.

Both the FDA and Paxil manufacturer have strengthened their warnings about Paxil and possible birth defects it may cause. In both of these warnings it is stated that you should consult your doctor before starting Paxil while pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Also in both of the warnings it is stated that you should weigh the risks versus the benefits of taking Paxil while pregnant, if you feel that the risks are too high your doctor may place you on alternative medication.
