Boston is one of the largest cities in the US, and has played a major role in its historic fight for freedom. Several significant events of the American Revolution took place here, including the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston. The city has become a prime destination for tourists, both local and foreign, interested in learning more about the country, and its struggle for independence.
Paul Revere was an American patriot, famous for his night ride on horseback to warn the citizens of an impending invasion. Revere who later worked for the Boston Committee of Correspondence was originally a silversmith, and is popularly known as an express rider, who was employed to carry messages. On April 18, 1775, he was sent out to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock, about the British troops who were marching to arrest them. He started his journey on horseback, riding through most of the night, stopping at every house on the way to warn the inhabitants, until he finally reached his destination around midnight.
Revere's house in downtown Boston is the oldest building there. Built in the 1600's, the architecture is from early colonial times. In the years after Revere sold the house, it has come to served many purposes- as a candy store, a tenement and even a cigar factory, until finally it was bought back by Revere's grandson and converted into a memorial house in 1908. The interior contains beautiful early colonial era furniture, intricate silverware, as well as artefacts including historic documents.
The house is located in Boston's North End, and is one of the 16 historic sites that are a part of the Freedom Trail. Tourists wanting to find out more about the city's long and rich history can sign up for this 2 and a half mile trek through the past.
