Partition Alignment For Increased Performance.

By:

We live in a fast-paced world, so the clich goes, as everybody knows. This holds true especially for the business world. To keep up, many of us rely on computers, which, puts the world at our fingertips. So, how will you keep up with a fast-paced world, if your organizations operation system is slow?

The answer: you cant!

Not unless you do something about it, of course.

If your computer is slow, there may be a problem. Possibly, this trouble has something to do with partition alignment.

Not good. This could affect your storage area network as well.

Not to worry; this dilemma has a resolution. Fixing things usually takes tools and in this case it is no different. The tool used for this type of repair is known as partition alignment tool. Suitable. What it does is first scan your operating system and informs you of any misalignments. It checks your drives and evaluates the misalignment. You are informed. Then it does its magic that brings your system to peak performanceit aligns them perfectly.

So, how does partition misalignment happen in the first place? Usually this occurs from incompatibility of a 4KB sector and the operating system it is applied to. Most systems are configured to run with 512 byte sectors.

Using a new hard drive with a 4KB sector size is going to conflict with the OS because most operating systems are designed to run 512KB sectors. The 4KB sector size is meant to increase I/O and capacity on the hard drive, but when the operating system is built for 512KB, the performance endures an adverse effectit slows.

This happens because as a partition creates clusters in 512 sectors rather that 4KB, the 4KB will push the clusters forward. This is a problem because one 512 sector is pushed forward, rendering an offset of 1. For the 4KB sector to work, it must have an offset of 0. Thus, the partition is misaligned.

Now, the drive will still run. Just not efficiently thoughit uses 3 step cycles for operations. It has to read, write, and modify during all requests. Thus, you get the decreased performance. Sad part is, not only does it not work efficiently, but your system is slower than before (irony).

Sometimes, however, these slowdowns are unnoticeable. Regardless to whether or not you perceive the malfunction, the potential of your system can not be realized. This is a waste of performance.

My advice to you: use a disk partition alignment tool to make sure that your system is operating optimally.
