Participate In The World's Weirdest Auctions With Wireless Internet Service

By:

eBay, the Internet auction site, is one of the most popular points for buying and selling goods on the planet. With this level of popularity, of course, have come some people who have wanted to test the boundaries of the capitalist market. Over the years, there have been some very strange things put up for sale on eBay, and each might say a little bit about our society. With wireless Internet service, who knowsmaybe you could be one of the next bidders, or even the winner, of the next of these items!

Many of eBay's most notorious auctions have to do with items of a, shall we say, intangible nature. At least four people over the last ten years have actually tried to sell their very souls on eBay. eBay of course always blocks these sales, generally on the grounds that the sale of the item cannot be verified, thereby contravening their internal policies. Perhaps on the grounds of not wanting to cause offense either to atheists or religious people, eBay has not taken a position on whether the human soul actually exists. In late 2010, a United Kingdom resident attempted to put a ghost for sale on eBay. Again, the company remained agnostic on the existence of the afterlife, but did state that since the ghost's existence could not be confirmed, the auction would be disallowed.

Other eBay auctions deal with items that do exist, but may have dubious value. Perhaps the most famous of these is the grilled cheese sandwich which sold for $28,000 in 2004. What was so special about this grilled cheese sandwich, you might ask? The toasting pattern on the bread, in the eyes of many people, bears a striking resemblance to the Virgin Mary. A pretzel in the shape of Mary was also sold in 2005, and another put up for auction a few years later, both receiving bids in excess of $10,000. On a more secular note, a piece of breakfast cereal which appeared in the shape of the alien E.T. from the eponymous 1980s movie sold for hundreds of dollars.

You might also be surprised to hear that some shockingly valuable items have been put up for sale on eBay as well. Believe it or not, using wireless Internet service you could one day be bidding on an actual U.S. fighter jet, or the original Hollywood sign that has overlooked Los Angeles for years, since both items were offered for sale on eBay at one point. There have also been some amazing real estate deals on the website as well. The last undeveloped part of the U.S. Virgin Islands was sold on eBay, as was an entire small town in California. With over nine billion dollars in revenue last year, there are bound to be some strange things for sale on the website. A quick review with wireless Internet service of the items being offered on eBay will tell you one of the fundamental truths about living in a capitalist society: today, almost anything can be for sale.
