The city of Paris is without a doubt one of the worlds most admired cities with its unique position as a centre for culture, fashion and the arts. The traveller to the French capital will be delighted by the myriad of attractions to be experienced and sights to be admired. There is no doubt that no traveller will leave the city disappointed.
The Paris Carnival la Promenade du Boeuf Gras as it is more correctly known, is a spectacular fiesta with a multitude of colourfully attired dancers, singers, drummers and musicians taking part. The French capital is often called the city of excitement and romance, and never is this more true than during this fiesta.
The event has its origins in the Middle Ages, giving it a centuries long heritage that few festivals around the world can match. 500 years ago international voyagers and European merchants habitually visited Paris just to experience the carnival. Sadly during the period of the twentieth century, the festival lost its impetus because of organizational problems. Between the years of 1952 and 1996 it was completely absent; fortunately the Culture Rights Association successfully campaigned to revive the historic fiesta and the extravaganza was relaunched in 1997 with more vigour than ever.
The festival is well known throughout France and is a much looked forward to event. Featuring continuous revelry and picturesque costume balls, there is a discernible air of festivity and merry-making in the air. Parades, extravagant feasts and even marriages are held during this spectacular celebration.
Held during New Years Eve, each edition of the carnival features a particular theme, such as Love or more unusual subjects like Cosmic Carnival, Astronauts and Aliens. Many Parisians and visitors of all ages and walks of life enthusiastically involve themselves in the festivities, forgetting their everyday worries and cares in the spirit of the moment. Urban centres, schools and associations all are transformed into a riot of colour and activity. The star of the show is an immense cow of the Limousine breed called Pimprenelle who in keeping with tradition leads the parade.
