Palolem Beach Goa's Treasure

By:

Goa is the smallest state in India, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in beauty. The state is renowned for its beaches, with the Arabian Sea forming its western border. It is also rich in fauna and flora, as it is situated on the Western Ghats, which has been identified as a biodiversity hotspot.

Palolem is a sleepy little fishing village found in South Goa, and the beach here is easily one of the most popular beaches in the state, even having been featured in a Hollywood film. Palolem is a natural bay and is flanked on either side by lofty headlands, making the sea especially calm. The shallow waters and lack of serious waves allow visitors to wade far out. There are several other islands located in the vicinity that are worth a visit as well.

Butterfly Island is the island found to the right when just entering the beach. Filled with a vast network of rocky trails for the adventurous to explore, the island is easily accessible during low tide. While many people traverse the chain of rocks bridging the island, the rocks can be slippery and one should exercise caution when walking across them. Monkey Island is another tourist favourite, and there are plenty of boats ferrying people to and from the island. The most popular aspect of the island is the statue found at the top, locally known as the Monkey Stone. Designed by Jacek Tylicki, an American Artist, the sculpture is actually titled Give If You Can, Take If You Have To, with many visitors either taking or leaving money here.

One can get to Palolem by train, which is an easy and scenic route. It is also possible to take a flight down to Margao and then take a taxi from the airport. Air conditioned buses are also a good choice. Shopaholics maybe slightly disappointed with the shopping available here, because although the crafts found on the beach are of exceptional quality, they do tend to be a bit overpriced.

Finding a place to stay can be time consuming since there are a number of Goa hotels to choose from. A good option is The Leela Kempinski Goa, which is one of the best Goa Beach resorts. Set on 75 glorious acres, the hotel has its own beach and golf course. For tourists wanting to unwind, it is the ideal place to stay.
