Pakistan Hockey Team Facing Disaster.

Pakistan Thursday sacked its hockey team officials and dissolved the national selection committee after the four times champions had their worst ever finish in the World Cup.

The Pakistan team finished last in the World Cup in New Delhi after losing to 2-3 to Canada in the 11th-12th place playoff here Thursday. Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president Qasim Zia has dissolved the team management and National Selection Committee after the poor performance of the team in World Cup," a PHF statement said Thursday. Team management given the sack included manager Asif Bajwa, coach Shahid Ali Khan and assistant coach Shafqat Malik, while selection committee included chief selector Hassan Sardar, Rana Mujahid Ali, Khalid Bashir, Farhat Khan and Muhammad Shafiq.Qasim said that after the team returns home, the PHF will call its executive board meeting and will hold an inquiry for the poor performance in the world cup. He also clarified that Bajwa will remain PHF secretary.

Former greats, meanwhile, launched scathing criticism of the PHF for the World Cup debacle. Islahuddin Siddiqui, former Pakistan captain, said the PHF should sack Bajwa as secretary, and held him responsible the team's performance.Akhtar-ul-Islam, another former Olympian and an ex-secretary of the PHF, agreed with Islah and said all the culprits responsible for the "embarrassing show" should be punished.

Muhammad Saqlain, former Pakistan captain, said the PHF has let Pakistan down and should be dissolved to allow a new management to rebuild the national team. The National Assembly (NA) Sports Standing Committee will grill Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials and national players following the team's disastrous showing in the Hockey World Cup in New Delhi. We would summon the PHF officials and players later this month to grill them on the World Cup debacle, chairman NA Sports Standing Committee, Jamshed Dasti told Geo Super TV channel Tuesday.

We are very disappointed on the teams performance in the World Cup and believe that some major changes should be made in the team. Meanwhile, former Pakistan captains Tuesday lambasted PHF secretary Asif Bajwa, calling him the reason behind the teams poor showing.PHF secretary Asif Bajwa himself opted to become the manager, he was also posing as chief coach during matches, now he should take responsibility of failure too, said former captain Islahuddin Siddiqui. When you take all the praise for victory, you should also be taking the responsibility of defeat," Siddiqui said.

Four times champions Pakistan, with just one win the group stage, finished last in their pool and now face the ignominy of playing for the 11th-12th position playoff against Canada.I am ready to quit and take the responsibility for the teams dismal show in the World Cup," said Zeeshan, a seasoned defender. I am ready to retire but its the PHF (Pakistan Hockey Federation) which will decide my future. According to a report Tuesday, Pakistans hockey chiefs will sit down in Lahore soon after the World Cup to take a decision on the future of under-performing senior players.

A Pakistan daily, The News, has reported that the national hockey think-tank will meet at the PHF headquarters next week to look into the reasons behind their teams poor showing. The team's performance sparked scathing criticism from all quarters, especially for the performance of senior players Sohail Abbas, Zeeshan, midfielder Waseem Ahmed, striker Rehan Butt and goalie Salman Akber.

The Pakistan hockey think-tank, which will meet in Lahore soon after the World Cup, will analyse the teams performance. It is expected to be a marathon meeting said a PHF source. It will focus on the performance of the senior players, who have failed to do well in the World Cup. There are indications that some of them might be ignored for future assignments.
Whenever our team loses in a major international event, its management is always shown the door, said another source. But the players who are equally responsible for the loss are spared. They always come back and fail. There is a chance this time the axe will fall on them.

However, there could also be a disagreement on sidelining the senior players from the national team. It will be a busy year for the Pakistan team which will be featuring in three international events before competing in the Asian Games in China in November.

Pakistan will take part in the Asian Champions Trophy in Ipoh in April before participating in the Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy, also to be staged in the Malaysian city early this summer. In October, Pakistan will feature in the Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi before the all-important Asian Games.

It is true that Pakistan didnt play well in the World Cup, said a PHF official on condition of anonymity. But the problem is that you cant just destroy the team by kicking out all the experienced players because there isnt enough bench strength.
