Packing Supplies For Self Storage

By:

After you've finally decided to make room in your home by renting a self storage unit, there is a lot more to do than just organize all your items. Packing supplies are a must-have and you'll need more than just a few boxes to get the job done and protect all your belongings. Some storage facilities have packing supplies, but if not, it's easy to purchase all the products you need online or in a shipping store.

Boxes and bubble wrap are the two most common items you'll need. Use different size boxes depending on the items you are putting in them. Keep in mind that you will still have to lift and carry these boxes so you shouldn't over-pack them. Put heavy items and books in small boxes and lighter items like towels and sheets in larger boxes. Corrugated boxes are standard, but you can also find special boxes for dinnerware and glassware. These will reduce the risk of breakage and offer more protection. Wardrobe boxes are designed specifically for your clothes so they can remain hung up.

Bubble wrap should be used on anything breakable like mirrors, dinnerware, and glasses. You can also use bubble wrap on furniture to protect it from scratches. Also invest in some furniture pads for the bottom of your pieces as well. Blankets, towels, and cardboard can all be used in between stacked furniture pieces too. Moving blankets are made of strong, woven fabric and can withstand long-term storage. If bubble wrap is too noisy, try pieces of foam or packing peanuts instead. They will work just as well. Newspaper may seem like a cheap alternative, but the ink can ruin your items. Instead, try packing paper, which is a thicker version of tissue paper.

Packing tape is another item you'll need plenty of. You have tons of boxes that need to be sealed up so purchase a few rolls. You might want to leave a box cutter in your storage unit when it comes time to open those boxes back up. If storing a mattress, it's important that you place it in a mattress cover to protect it from dirt, dust, and stains. Otherwise, you might not want to use that mattress ever again. Markers are imperative if you want to be able to find all your items again. Taking the time to label each box will make your life much simpler when you need to locate something quickly. For those with a lot of boxes to move, I suggest buying a pair of gloves to avoid any cardboard cuts and ensure you have a tight grip on the boxes.

All hardware for disassembled furniture should go in marked bags and be kept together. Machine oil should be wiped on any tools or bikes to prevent rust. Sofa and chair covers will keep dirt from damaging the materials. Lastly, if your public storage facility does not provide you with a lock, you will need a padlock to secure your space. With all these supplies ready in hand, not only will your move to a storage unit be quick and easy, your belongings will remain well-protected.
