The SSAT and ISSE are both ways in which private and independent schools assess the abilities of potential pupils as part of their admission process. Some schools use one and some the other and there are a few schools that use both. They differ in several ways.

The Secondary Schools Admissions Test covers a large varying range of reading problems in its comprehension area. The Independent Schools Selection Examination differs because it limits itself to a range of history, social studies, and science.

The both differ in other section because the set-up and placement of sections is different, the SSAT starting with the essay section and the ISSE ending with the essay. They also vary in multi-choice with one using 5 and one using 4.

The ISSE contains a variety of verbal and reasoning tests, which are structured to gauge the child's ability to learn. It also is designed to measure a child's individual academic talents and areas of needed improvement.

The SSAT, although its format is slightly different, is designed just as carefully and with the same aim in view - to discover what the child is capable of academically. It has been designed to simplify the application process both for students and for their teachers who must recommend them.

Just as the ISSE is used by self governing schools if you are applying at a Catholic school you maybe asked to take a Catholic High School Entrance Exam. You can find examples and questions online at several resources. This will help you child prepare and get comfortable with the format of the tests before the test is actually given.

The ISSE and SSAT are challenging exams, which test not only your knowledge this far, but also they examine the way in which your child thinks. Preparing for this test will give your child the best chance of succeeding.
