Outsmarting Thieves

Outsmarting Thieves

By:

The job of a locksmith at the end of the day comes down to outsmarting thieves and other trespassers by coming up with locks and defences that they are unable to bypass. This is essentially something of an arms race between locksmiths and criminals criminals constantly upping their game to come up with better ways to bypass locks, and locksmiths constantly coming up with cleverer and cleverer locks that cant so easily be picked or bypassed. Over time there have been lots of innovations born out of this arms race such as the detector lock that can recognise its being tampered with and so then fix itself in a set position, and the protector lock which moves and changes shape in response to being picked. Here we will look at a few clever examples of how certain locksmith innovations can outsmart thieves.

DND keys: DND stands for do not duplicate and simply these keys have these three letters printed on them so that the person who finds it/uses it cannot get the key copied. Often when there is a break in or any other form of criminal activity, it occurs because of someone on the inside as it were who has access to the keys and/or knows the layout of the property. As such they might then be given a key legitimately but then take the opportunity to get it copied. With a DND key you can be sure when you hand out keys to your tenants or your employees, that they wont get the key copied and that when you get it back you have the only copy in existence.

Time lock: The locks on bank vaults got more and more elaborate and clever until powerful digital locks and clever mechanical combinations meant that they were almost unbeatable without the access codes. However the thieves then adapted to this situation and realised they could simply take the bank workers hostage and then torture them in order to get the combination. Hence the time lock. This then allowed the worker to quickly lock the door permanently so that it could not be opened even with the correct code until an allotted amount of time thus there was no purpose in criminals trying to torture them for a code as they wouldnt be able to use it anyway. Today, largely as a result of this, almost no bank robberies in the traditional sense occur.

Digital locks: Digital locks simply cant be picked because there is no mechanical element to pick. Better yet some digital locks require biometric data in order to open that being a finger print or an eyeball something that cant be mimicked or stolen.

The lesson here is to think outside the box to beat potential thieves and to use this kind of psychological warfare to outsmart the thieves just as locksmiths always have. For instance you have a combination lock? Then why not try changing the combination every day perhaps adding +4 to the number every week. Anyone who tries to spy the number will be outsmarted. Or why not keep your porch and house key on a separate key ring? Then any thief clever enough to get one still wont be able to get into your home.
