A Different Kind Of Braces

After the otoplasty operation, your kid will have braces to wear. Struggling with getting kids to wear stuff they don't like is a big chore, but it has to be done. The brace will usually be made of wiring and bandages, and while it may seem awkward, it's much easier for kids to wear than the traditional gauze and bandage approach.

There also will be a headband that must be worn during sleep. Long after the braces come off, your child will still have to sleep with the headband. In recent years, many surgeons are choosing to use splints, which are much easier and less awkward.

Swelling, Bruising, Pain And Other Troubles

Swelling and bruising are a natural part of the recovery period. You can expect to see some swelling right after the operation, followed by a period of calm, and then it will often come back again with a vengeance. This is the natural process of the ear fixing itself.

The best way to deal with swelling is to keep the head elevated as much as possible and to take it easy with physical activities. This is often the most difficult part-Keeping your kids from playing too hard while they're recovering from otoplasty.

Unfortunately, it doesn't take too much knocking around to undo all that hard work your surgeon's done, so keep your children from being too active at first. Your doctor will let you know when it's alright to resume playing.
