Otoplasty: Its Recovery Period And Possible Side Effects

By:

If you are not happy with the shape, size, or placement of your ears, there is a special surgery to fix them. It is called otoplasty. Though it is considered quite helpful for those wishing to change something about their ears, it should be remembered that it is still surgery. This means that side effects are very possible, and the recovery time is not exactly fun.

You will get some anesthesia during the operation so that it is not painful. However, it wears off eventually, and then you might feel some discomfort. Firstly, you will return home with a bandage wrapped around your head that will likely feel bulky due to its padding.

It will usually be replaced with a lighter one after the first day or so, but expect to wear some sort of bandage for about a week. You will then have to wear a headband for a few weeks, just to keep your ears in place rather than for fashion.

You will likely be in recovery for about a month and a half, though you can probably return to work after a few days as long as you take it easy. You should protect your ears from extreme weather, as heat or the cold can damage their new shape. In fact, protecting them from being moved or jostled is important, which the bandages and headband should help with.

During or after the otoplasty recovery period, you might experience some swelling or bruising of the treated area. You might not even see your preferred ear size and shape for the first few days, as they are still healing. Your doctor will probably give you medication for any throbbing or pain.

As with any type of surgery, otoplasty may result in an infection, in which case you will have a fever. If this occurs, let your surgeon know immediately so you can get the proper antibiotics. You could also develop blood clots, which your doctor should keep an eye out for.

In general, otoplasty is no more dangerous than most other surgeries. However, occasionally, negative side effects occur. If you want to get the look you want, you will need to take the small risk of such issues happening.

Though you should not be worried, you should be prepared. Having a qualified surgeon that you trust can help minimize issues, making otoplasty a great experience that gets you the results you want.
