Definition

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a procedure that's usually done to correct extremely large, protruding ears. Adult patients can either be completely put under with anesthesia, or can simply get a local anesthetic to numb pain as the doctor works on the ears. Children, however, are generally put to sleep with anesthesia prior to the operation. Often times, it's a procedure that's done for kids around first grade, because they are being taunted in school because of the size of their ears. During the procedure, the surgeon can pin the ears or remove extra skin and cartilage to help reshape the ears. This way, the ears will not stick out as much and there's less embarrassment.

Candidates

Oftentimes, the prime candidates for ear surgery are children around six years and up. However, any healthy person at this age and over can get the procedure. Usually, most people get it at a young age since this is when the teasing starts. Yet, plenty of adults go forward with the procedure too so that they won't be annoyed or frustrated with their ears anymore.

Risks

While there are numerous benefits to getting this type of cosmetic surgery, it does come with some risk. For instance, some patients experience infections, excess bleeding, scarring and more. In addition, it has been reported that a feeling of numbness can be felt on the ear or near the face for a while or even permanently. Furthermore, as with any surgery, it is possible that you may not like the results or could have had unrealistic expectations going in. For the most part, patients are pleased, yet it's important to keep in mind that nothing's guaranteed.

Recovery

While the procedure isn't something that takes too long, there's much to consider during recovery and healing time. For instance, the patient will have to wear a bandage on his or her head for a while to help reduce swelling around the area. Some people are initially surprised by the fact that their ears are really big and then think their otoplasty was not a success. That's why it's important to keep in mind that the swelling is temporary. In addition, it's a good idea to make sure patients take it easy and do not involve themselves in activities that could hurt them. Also, kids need a little more time to heal than adults. So expect for your child to rest at least a week before easing back into activities. Adults can typically resume their normal routine after just a few days.
