Orville And Wilbur Wright - Innovation On Basics

By:

Before ever considering an airplane, Orville (1871-1948) and Wilbur (1867-1912)Wright had an active and thriving bicycle manufacturing business in Dayton, Ohio. They were fascinated in watching birds, in particular gulls sweeping in the breezes. These two men revolutionized transit, and came along at the same time as the automobile was making it easier for people to get around, even out to an airport. It was December 17, 1903 that the two brothers arrived at a windy place in the east, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

They created this aeroplane out of bicycle parts in their home town and then shipped this contraption that frightened the horses, they then reached Kitty Hawk and made their first attempt to flight. The first attempt failed, the second attempt of flight by man was achieved. Though the longest flight that day was only fifty nine seconds, it inspired others to make similiar structures and soon men were in flying machines all over America and Europe. That this 1903 flight was the first heavier than air flight, which allows the distinction of the French who had successfully risen in a hot air balloon in 1789, and the Union Military used a hot air balloon was sent aloft to spy on Rebel positions.

The boys as brothers were very logical, practical, scientific. Wilbur was born in Millville, Indiana in 1867 and Orville four years later at Dayton, Ohio.Orville and Wilbur showed mechanical abilities early. They had scientific minds although they only attended grade school. They were patient, careful, and would spend hours collecting data. They would argue endlessly, until one adjusted his thinking closer to the other by the power of his logic, not the strength of his voice. It was only in 1896 that they considered a flying machine.

Before they had toyed with the idea, but it was only after the death of Otto Liniehthal, who had been an accomplished glider pilot in many failed flights. They studied his blueprints and noticed where his weaknesses. They brgan to build models and Liniehthal glider morphed into the Wright brothers airplane. They also realized that while the design of Liniehthal glider allowed for the ability to float in the air, to be able to lift off and actually fly would require motor power. Another gentleman scientist, Sir Hiram Maxim had failed when he tried air flight by using steam.

Lesser men may have given up, as the brothers failed time after time. They even found often the improvements they had fabricated made flight less likely. They became obsessed with this idea of adapting that glider to become an airplane with an engine. They also looked at the plans of famous balloons and gradually worked towards their goal. Economy was always a hallmark for the brothers, thrift and careful use of parts was vital. The Wrights had to seek information from all who had attempted flight but failed.

And yet they studied. The wobbly looking frail Wright brothers first flight on rickety film footage was really a glider with power the strength, it was said, of a lawn mower engine fueled by gas. Two individuals who could not afford to began the aircraft industry.
