The main and pressing issue of the modern adult life is how to balance time between work and family. The current lifestyle is one riddled with stress; commuting to work, shopping, eating a poor diet and struggling to find time for the children. Now more than ever employers are making extreme demands on the workforce, and expecting more work from less employees. It has been estimated that 47 million workers in the United States are part of a two-career family. This indicating that most families are becoming less and less centered around the home, and that many parents are running on fumes with little time to meet the personal needs of their children.

With so many busy schedules and little time for opportunity at home, it is hard telling just how all of the work-family strains are affecting our society. Both male and female workers report growing concerns over their personal and family health, though the strain is often felt more strongly by women. Many women in their early thirties who are beginning to bear more and more responsibility in the workforce, are expressing the desire to pursue opportunity at home, by beginning a family. Yet with monetary conditions the way that they are, fewer and fewer people in their early thirties are meeting the financial requirements for beginning a family. In our current society many people do not possess the means for opportunity at home.

Experts in the area of opportunity at home seem split when it comes to the issue of balancing work and family. Most of the literature to date on this topic has dealt with theoretical issues. Little has dealt with the practical organizational implications of the strain created by the conflicting demands of work and home. Surprisingly, while many of the remedies touted in the popular press entail greater integration of work and home (such as home-based employment) our findings indicate a greater need for separation of the two domains. Hall Boston University) Though many experts believe that working from home will only increase family strain, many doctors and members of the press believe that finding opportunity at home is the solution to the entire problem.

Whether one chooses to work inside or outside of the home, balancing family life continues to be a fierce predicament. Since the beginning prevalence of the two-career family, there has been a measurable decline in the collective quality of life, and statistics in the areas of psychological health and education among children are certainly reflecting this decline. Finding opportunity at home while maintaining a nine to five work schedule proves to be trying, and many communities are weakening as a result.
