Opportunity At Home: Avoiding Work-at-home Schemes

By:

Many people currently seeking at home jobs are at very high risk of getting swept into a 'work-at-home scheme'. There are many forms of work-at-home schemes which deter people from achieving true opportunity at home. A work at home scheme is a get rich quick scheme that lures people in by offering them at home employment. The schemers often offer to pay the worker an amount that far exceeds the market price for the same amount of labor, and then find ways to cheat the worker out of mass amounts of money.

Work at home schemes have been around since the sixties, and while schemers used to post ads in newspapers only, they now have infiltrated pretty much all media sources. Legitimate sources of opportunity at home do exist, but it has been estimated that only 1 in 42 advertisements found in the media are linked to actual paying jobs. Most at home jobs that do pay well require some sort of trade school or other educational background, and at home jobs are commonly known to require more will power and know how than an on location job.

Some common examples of work-at-home schemes that claim to provide opportunity at home include: stuffing envelopes; assembly of items of some type, such as crafts jewelry, or medical equipment; data entry; processing medical claims; making phone calls; online surveys; sales of a product or service that is difficult or impossible to sell (also known as a pyramid scheme). While some such opportunity at home providers are in fact sound employers, these are the main areas to be cautious of when seeking at home employment.

There are many signs to watch for that can indicate when a job is a work at home scheme. If the job requires that you pay a fee before beginning employment, then it is most likely a scheme. Most legitimate jobs will not require you to pay a fee. If the pay seems too good to be true, then it probably is. If the employer seems as though they would hire anyone, regardless of skill level or training, then it is probably a scheme. If the company does not appear to have a permanent location it suggests that the business might only be centered around the recruitment of employees, and not around the satisfaction of customers.

It is unfortunate that people seeking opportunity at home are so often sucked into money draining work-at-home schemes, but it is something to be acknowledged during any career search. It seems that these schemes tend to target the most vulnerable members of society, struggling parents, people with little skills, the elderly, struggling college students, and the disabled. As long as one remains skeptical during their career search, these schemes are more than easy to avoid.
