Back in the old days, there used to be only one main job for tech games and that was the role of game designer. The game designer did everything from the sound down to the art. Today with advances in technology there are now several jobs when it comes to game designer jobs. Today the job title of game designer is too general. Not only are there different jobs, but also different specialties.

Level designers are probably the best known of all game designers. A level designer's job is to well...create levels. They place creatures, items, props, or sometimes they have junior level designers to do this. Level designers may even create many of the needed assets and add scripts according to make the game flow smoothly. So you're a level designer, what's your specialty? FPS, MMO, or RPG? Each game designer needs to have an in-depth knowledge of their specialty.

Content designers write the story and add detail in the game design to go with it. Today since there are advances in technology, content designers are constantly needed. Content designers are not the story tellers. Story tellers just tell the story, and craft the scenes; but content designers also create the overall mission of the game.

Lead designers are in charge of the game designers and make sure the game is created correctly. They are responsible for teaching newcomers the ropes. They create the core of the game and define its feature set. Assign jobs to the game designers and look over their work. Don't think that the job of a lead is just to boss people around. No they work too. They work on the art and programming. Leads are also encouragers. They help others improve their skills and help shape them to become better.

Game writers or storytellers are essential. They are the writers of the whole story. Not just anybody can step into their shoes. These writers have to be creative and have constant new ideas. Sometimes the content designers and game writers are the same.

Technical designers program and design. They are responsible for a lot of the game play. Technical designers need to have a great deal of knowledge when it comes to probability and stats. They can often both be a technical designer and a system designer. System designers focus on system in the game. They create props and what the character is capable of doing.

Usability experts make sure that the game and player communicate well with each other. They make sure that the player always knows what's going on in the game. They are responsible for creating new designs when it comes to player and game communication.

Senior designers are the backup men when more people are needed. They have to have knowledge of all other jobs in the game design world. A junior designer is usually the assistant for lead designers and senior designers. When you first start out in game design, you will want to be a junior designer. All junior designers are basically someone new to the job and needs help to get started.

Lastly there is the game director or creative director. This is the boss of the whole operation. They know how to do all of the above jobs and have titles. They are the biggest and brightest you can get. The director will sometimes fill in for someone else if they aren't there.

Whatever field you may want to be in, just know that game design today is too general. There is way more jobs in game design today than ever.
