Open Mouth - Diagnose Health

By:

Good oral hygiene has been taught to us since early on. Commercials touted good oral hygiene to produce great smiles and healthy teeth that will last. Taking care of teeth and gums is important for a variety of reasons but it is also important for you to occasionally examine your mouth for other issues that may arise. Your mouth can be an indicator of your overall health. Tooth decay and gum issues are primary concerns for dentists but they are also looking for other tell tale signs of something amiss. Some of these could be flat teeth, dry mouth and sores, all indicators of other problems.

Have your ever experienced dry mouth? The immediate remedy you put into place was to drink water thinking it was just dehydration. However, dry mouth can be a symptom of a more serious disease such as diabetes or Sjogren's Syndrome. If drinking water doesn't solve the problem, a visit to your doctor should be next.

Sores in your mouth could be a sign of infection but sores that don't go away can be a sign of oral cancer which can be especially serious and life threatening in those over 60. White webbing inside the cheeks that looks a little lacier can be a sign of Lichen Planus a skin disease that is manifesting inside the mouth. While the occasional sore inside the mouth is okay continuous problems with sores or ones that don't go away should be checked out by your primary care physician or dentist.

Dentist will also check for flat teeth which will indicate grinding. Grinding is something that most of us aren't even aware we are grinding. Grinders usually are given a protective mouth guard at night so you don't wear away the enamel on your teeth. Cracks and crumbling of the teeth may be a sign of GERD or indication of bulimia.

. It is important to take care of your gums and teeth as they are the only set you get. The next step would be dentures or veneers. After you brush your teeth, examine your mouth and gums to make sure everything looks healthy. If you think something is amiss, schedule an appointment with either your dentist or doctor to determine if there is a more serious issue at hand.
