Open Doors With A Cleaner Physician Resume

By:

All of us at some point in our lives have had to look for a job and during that process had to create a resume for prospective employers to review. It has been proven time and again that the cleaner and clearer the resume, the better the chance of securing the job.

The medical industry is no exception to this rule and physicians may find it particularly hard to cleanly compose their resume. Here are a few suggestions that might help improve the chances of landing that dream physician job.

First, in formatting the resume, be sure that the pertinent information is first-don't lead off with dates. Leading with dates will make the reader have to dig deeper to find the information they are looking for and create an almost hypnotic line of numbers.

While it is important to use dates, be sure to place the pertinent information initially. In the art of selling yourself, the resume should list those key elements and experiences that employers are looking for first.

Additionally, it is highly recommended that physicians use a clear and easy to follow chronological timeline in highlighting their experience and education. Using a reverse chronological order will make it easier for resume's reader to follow all of the key experience and education points.

By starting with the most recent position and title, working back through the pertinent work and education experiences allows employers to quickly get an understanding of the applicant's experience and qualifications.

Another suggestion to consider when updating a resume is to keep it to a maximum of two pages. This may be a real task for tenured and experienced physicians, but it makes a difference when all of the information can be presented in a shorter, but concise, two-page format. Abbreviate information where possible without taking out the key message or experience listed.

Physicians in many circumstances can create a separate document or addendum containing additional information regarding education, charitable work, services, etc., that may have been abbreviated in the resume. This separate document or addendum can then be presented upon request of the employer.

Also, it is suggested that the formatting be uniform throughout the resume. As in all things marketing, a resume must be visually appealing; therefore, it is important to have clean and uniform formatting throughout.

By implementing these simple suggestions to your physician or medical resume, you'll be increasing your chances of landing that dream job in that dream city.
