Online Providers For Counselor Ceus - Who To Choose

By:

It is that time of the year again. Now you have to remember where you put all of those flyers, postcards, and brochures of the various CEU providers that you received over the last year or two. It is doubtful that anyone anticipates this time with joy, but they all know it is inevitable.
What are the options: you can register for a conference or seminar, then pack a bag, purchase an airline ticket, book a hotel room, reserve a rental car and plan on being locked away for two, three or four days. Once there you may or may not get enough value to consider it worth your time and money. As crazy and hectic as all this sounds, this was done for years across all professions. What other options are there?
The internet brings another option. Online continuing education is a booming field. Not only are there plenty of choices, in addition, most states allow counselors to earn from half to all of their required CEUs in this manner. This method can be a huge time and money saver. Time and money saved that would have been spent at the airport, rental car place, hotel, etc. This allows you to invest that time and money back into your family and your practice.
Onine continuing education has the most benefits. The question then lies in how to find the best online provider. As is with most things not all providers are created equal. There are some key things to look for when shopping for an online CE provider. Don't settle on a provider who only meets one or two of these items, but rather take the time to search and find one who meets all of theses.
The top priority is to find a provider that is approved to offer continuing education to counselors in your state. One fast way to check is to see if they are approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). If so, they should have a provider number displayed somewhere on their site. Even though this approval covers most states, some states are not. Do your homework and know what your state board accepts.
Secondly, look at the course list. Are all of the basic courses offered in order for you to fulfill your requirements in one place. Not only is it more convenient for you to attain all of your CE in one place, but you can usually get better pricing as well. Not only do you want to see if the basics are there, but if they have enough elections in other areas of interest as well. Take this time as an opportunity to grow and develop beyond where you are now. One last thing on the course list, be sure that the content is quality content and is sourced properly.
Something else to consider are the things that make a good provider great. Benefits like: a) being able to read the course material and exams for free; b) a user-friendly website; c) having multiple attempts to pass the exam; d) not having to pay if you don't pass; e) having top-notch customer service (quick responses to issues and questions).
Although you will save time and money attaining your CEUs online, the process is not yet perfected. It is always recommended to begin knowing the rules and regulations of your state board. Then you can match providers to the features mentioned above to find what makes sense for you. This will all pay off in the end with a much more rewarding continuing education experience.
