Online Poker Are You Playing Too Many Hands?

By: Derek Williams

If youre trying to improve your online poker game, take an honest look at your playing style and accurately pinpoint your flaws. This may seem simple but its the hardest thing to do because most of us find it difficult to see ourselves objectively or to admit that were doing something wrong. Once youve figured out where youre going wrong, aim to right them one by one. One of the mistakes youre very probably making is that of playing too many hands. Beginners as well as veterans of the game tend to do this when playing poker online. This mistake has cost a lot of players a lot of money.

Signs that you are playing too many hands

When playing online poker, it is normal to do everything possible to just stay in the game. This could be because of addiction or boredom. Observe your game. Youll notice times when youre losing a lot of hands. Times when a hand is simply no good, but you still play it because you have a feeling that this is your lucky day; if you havent had a good hand in a while, you are more likely to do this. Youd rather play a poor game and be in the game than sensibly accept that a hand is no good. If this describes you, then you are playing too many hands. Most players who play too many hands know in their gut that they are doing so, but theyd rather see it as optimism than a flaw.

How do I better manage my game?

Playing too many hands can greatly affect your game and the weight of your wallet. Its never too late to fix this though. Just play fewer hands. Increase the number of hands that you give up in pre-flop. If youre playing more than 40 % of your hands and youre on a losing streak, then accept that youre not having a good poker day. If something like this happens to you, learn to automatically throw about 80 % of the hands you get.

When you realize early on that you have bad cards, stop playing.

If you are a beginner and dont know the difference between a good hand and an awful one, learn as much as you can from free articles on the Internet, online poker forums, and poker strategy or 101 books written by expert poker players. Play a physical game with a few long-time poker players and dont be shy to ask for tips on improving your style.

Keep a count of the number of hands in the game and of each time you fold. Once youre done playing, calculate your pre-flop folding percentage. If its above 80 %, youre doing all right. And if its not, you now know what to do. Reducing the number of hands you play will take discipline, and some really bad poker games! But keep at it and youll soon be playing like a pro.
