Online Mastering Provides Enhancement And Quality Control For Music

By:

Mastering engineers are highly skilled individuals who offer the final production process in the audio production chain. Mastering happens in a special type of studio that has very linear acoustics, high quality loudspeakers and a wide range of stereo analogue equipment that is capable of manipulating stereo mixes. When music is recorded and mixed it is performed on recording equipment and in an environment which may not lend itself ideally to catching very little detail. Some of the loudspeakers used are very small and will not be capable of reproducing low frequencies very well. In addition the acoustics of the studio may not reveal what is present within a given mix. This is understandable as the engineer will be considering the tone of instruments and their relative balance in the mix and small sonic details may not be focussed upon. It is often the case that when mixes are completed that the band is not 100pct satisfied with the mix and problems such as odd frequency response can be found. Such as too much or too little bass, too little or too much high frequency energy may be present. In fact there can be any of these type of frequency based problems which will hinder the musical translation to other sound systems. Online mastering will correct these sonic problems.

The online mastering studio will be operated by an engineer who will have had many years recording and mixing experience in a professional environment and he will be well versed in being able to hear when there is a balance issue in a music mix. This is also made more easy by listening on highly detailed monitors and a very neutral response room. Neutral response means that the room has been acoustically treated in a way that allows the engineer to hear what is in a mix without the reflections from the room interfering with judgements. This means the engineer can make very accurate adjustments to the sound and ensure that when it leaves the studio it is going to translate to reproduction systems as well as it can.

The engineer will normally have a set of analogue audio tools that are stereophonic in nature. These tools will allow tweaks to be made and then sent onwards to the next audio tool. A typical mastering chain would be an analogue compressor, an analogue equalizer, stereo width tools and limiting. The sensitive and careful adjustments of the parameters on these tools will enhance the music and ensure it sounds as good as possible to the widest range of listeners. EQ allows the engineer to adjust the tone of a mix, this tool is a like an amplifier tone control but it is more sophisticated in nature with more controls per band. A compressor allows the online mastering engineer to manipulate the dynamics of the music and also add a special characteristic tone from the circuits of an analogue electronics. Once the music has been captured into a digital audio workstation further changes can be made in the digital realm. Mastering tends to have a focus on the sonic changes but equally important is listening for glitches which are common in the world of digital audio editing. The mastering engineer will also make level adjustment and fade adjustment to the music so it flows comfortably or creatively (if guided by the client) into the next track. Online mastering is a very important process and can significantly enhance the sound of music releases.
