Online Forms: Tips For A Higher Response Rate

By:

Whether you want to create an online form to collect your customers feedback, conduct a survey, generate sales leads, or encourage people to sign up for your newsletter, its really easy. You dont need programming skills, as there are plenty of companies out there that allow you to make online forms with just a few clicks of your mouse, and all within a few minutes. Some are free and most are customizable. The hard part is getting a certain number of people to respond, but well show you what you can do to attain a higher response rate.

In general, the more questions or fields there are in your form, the less people will fill it out. Five to seven is ideal, but if you can reduce the number to three, then youll get more respondents.

Position your form above the fold or on the upper half of your web pages. Also, the more pages on your website you place your form, the better.

If you need to ask a lot of questions, e.g. for surveys or lead generation, utilize a staged approach. Ask the same number of questions, but dont put them all on a single page. Show a few questions on the first page, and place optional, customized, or more detailed questions on the next. This technique will only work if you keep the first page short and straightforward, though.

Filter out questions. Dont ask every question that comes to your mind. Write down the reason why you are collecting this information, and use it to determine which questions to ask and which ones you can do without.

For newsletter signup forms, you can ask follow-up questions to learn more about your visitors or suggest your other newsletters. Gather your visitors name and email on the first page, then show a second page with the extra questions or newsletters. Not all companies offer this feature, however.

Create a support form to provide a way for your customers to contact you quickly should they have any problems with your product or service. You can also follow up with some questions to gain insight that you can use for future marketing.

Choose a service with a tracking feature. This allows you to see how many people visit the web page that has the form, how many fill out only part of the form, and how many complete the whole process.

The process for building your online form varies for each company that offers the service, but almost all will guide you through it. Different companies also offer different features and pricing schemes, so look around first to see which one will best fit your needs.
