Online Doctorate Program - Busy People Can Get A Doctorate From Home

By:

Making an online doctorate program a success when it comes to non-traditional learning can be a tricky thing, sometimes. What's certain, however, is that a valid program can be a convenient way to finally obtain a doctoral-level degree that wasn't even available as little as a half-decade ago. The reasons for why may be related to traditional educator reluctance to extend online learning to the very highest degree usually offered by a university.

Education has a history of being slightly resistant to changes in the physical delivery of knowledge. The prevailing thought is that it could only be obtained by the act of sitting in a classroom or in studying in front of a mentor and professor, for the most part. This was so until the far-ranging penetration of the Internet finally made it possible to deliver post-graduate training and education in an efficient manner out in cyberspace.

Normally, a student could expect to spend at least 2 years in studying and preparing for the effort to gain a doctoral degree. It's still mostly true that twenty-four months is the minimum time necessary, but the online delivery process has made it a lot more convenient and even comfortable to work towards obtaining that doctorate. Whether from a laptop or a desktop computer, it can now be done.

It's encouraging, also, that even the magic 2 year hurdle can be shortened, in the right set of circumstances, though that's largely of little concern when a person can work towards the degree in a far more comfortable manner. Online lectures and even research and one-to-ones with a professor - through webcams and the like - can be delivered on schedules convenient to both the student and the professor/thesis advisor. Sometimes, students report the quality of the program is even greater when it's online.

Historically, many colleges and even quite a few doctoral-level educators had a natural level of resistance to creating programs aimed at getting a doctorate to the online world. Some of this may have been a reluctance to experience the sea change in educational delivery present when learning is done in an online medium. Always check, though, to make sure the doctorate program is offered by an accredited school and that it's requiring actual work, as opposed to giving a degree based just on experience in some field.

A prospective doctoral candidate just needs to make sure the program is valid, and offered by an accredited college or university, as there are more than a few fly-by-night schools out there. These institutions make outlandish promises about getting a doctoral degree just by using experiential credits. However, NO real program grants a doctorate based solely on past experience.

Making an online doctorate program a success for the student is a distinct possibility if both the doctoral student and the training program work together to meet goals. The fact of the reach of the Internet today has made online education easier than ever to extend to prospective students who desire to obtain a doctorate in a course of study. Just make sure the program being offered is both real and based on actual learning. And watch for any unrealistic promises as to completion times made by the school.
