One Night @ The Call Centre By Chetan Bhagat

By:

All the call centre workers share some common problems, such as racist comments, irate customers, pressure of targets and bosses who dont understand a thing about their work. Apart from this, all the employees have their own personal problems, and the book titled One Night at the Call Centre tells their story, from close quarters.

The Characters

The narrator of the story is Shyam who is also the leader of the group, though he is still struggling with the break up with his girlfriend and does not know how to assert himself against a boss who doesnt understand his pressures. His friend, Varun, is also called Vroom because he is passionate about fast bikes. During the novel, he becomes the voice of a youth movement. Shyams ex girlfriend Priyanka cannot make up her mind between what she wants and pleasing her mother. She is about to marry a rich NRI when she finds out some uncomfortable truths about her future husband.

Esha is a model wannabe who belongs to a small town but realizes her dream career has its own trappings and that life there wont be easy. Radhika lives with her in-laws and her absent husband and doesnt know how to deal with the situation. She is angry with the world and controls her feelings with anti depressants. She is in for a rude shock which will let her take control of her life again. The quietest and the oldest character of the book One Night at the Call Centre is military uncle who looks forward to reconcile with his estranged son though he realizes he will need to swallow his ego in the process.

Stepping Stone to Other Careers

All the six workers are friends with each other and share their problems too. They all are just treating their call centre job as a stepping stone to their real careers till they find out what they want to do with their lives. They are all into the job because they need the money and they are used to a lifestyle.

Same Pressures Everywhere

The issues being faced by the call centre workers include parental pressure, conformity, peer pressure, rejection and frustration. One day, when they are facing a life and death issue, they receive a call from God who asks them to listen to their own calling. Although Chetan Bhagat has been panned by critics time and again, you cant but agree with the writer himself who says he may not be a good writer, but he is a great story teller.
