The SAT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. First introduced in 1926, the exam measures a students scholastic aptitude for tertiary education. Many colleges and universities in the US today require an SAT score as an eligibility component. Its name and scoring mechanism has changed several times over time. It was first called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, then the Scholastic Assessment Test. Today, the SATs do not stand for anything.

The latest revision of the SATs, introduced in 2005, takes three hours and forty-five minutes to finish and costs $49 ($75 for international takers), excluding late fees. Scores range from 600-2400, depending on how one does in its three 800-point sections (Mathematics, Critical Reading, and Writing). It should be noted, however, that apart from SAT scores, colleges and universities often include other factors of evaluation such as class rank, grade point average (GPA), and extracurricular activities.

It would be a good idea to utilize an SAT software package for your SAT preparations, especially if youre self-studying. Apart from an SAT preparation software, there are also numerous ways to prepare for the SATs. One of which is to enroll in an SAT prep course. Some people would even hire personal tutors in preparation for the SATs. Such alternatives, however, typically cost more than the traditional self-study option.

Most SAT preparation software packages include practice problems on subjects covered by the exam, as well as flashcards that are useful for building up the skills you will need in answering the test (i.e., speed, accuracy, comprehension, and retention). SAT software solutions that come with practice tests become very useful as they prepare you to take the exam by creating a condition similar to that of the actual SATs.

There are numerous sources of SAT prep software packages. Software CDs are sold in bookstores as well as on the Internet. Some websites even provide you with a number of reviews of different SAT prep software along with the option of buying them directly from the Web. Meanwhile, other sites allow you to try SAT software solutions for a number of days before deciding to buy it.

Ultimately, keep in mind that an efficient SAT preparation software package should help you in getting higher test results. Assess an SAT preparation software package based on its ease of use, feature set, help/support, content, and most importantly, effectiveness.
