Several analysts have already claimed that Wisconsin"s OL which returns 5 starters and features 1st Team All Big Ten senior stars LT Gabe Carimi & Center John Moffit is the best Offensive Line in the nation. To be the best, a team must first be best inside its own conference. Last year"s Ohio State"s OL played ferociously in the latter part of the season as Coach Tressel mixed in more of a traditional I formation offense with the spread. Ohio State"s OL, while not receiving the preseason hype due to a sluggish start to last year"s season, returns 4 starters including 1st Team All Big Ten LG Justin Boren.

Both Offensive Lines gave up approximately the same amount of sacks. So we will call pass protection ability a draw. However, looking at the rush numbers for both teams against the better run defenses in the Big Ten, an analyst can"t help but notice the lack of run production by Wisconsin. Against Northwestern 99 yds 2.8 ypc, Ohio St 118 yds 2.7 ypc, Iowa 87 yds 2.7 ypc, Michigan St. 193 yds 3.9 ypc. Ohio State"s OL seemed to open up more holes against the Big Ten"s best rush defenses. Against Iowa 229 yds 4.5 ypc, Penn St 228 yds 4.7 ypc, Wisconsin 97 yds 3.6 ypc, and a season low of 66 yds versus Purdue. Since the Purdue and Wisconsin games came early in the season, prior to Tressel"s play calling changes, it seems clear that at the end of the season, Ohio St had the better offensive line.

Now, some may argue, and rightfully so, that skill players affected these statistics. Having a QB in Pryor, that runs a sub 4.4 40 and who ran for 779 yards last year cannot be overlooked. For this reason, I rate Ohio St"s and Wisconsin"s OL as equal and rank them on top in the Big Ten Conference.
