Ohio Company Just One Of Many Adding Urology Jobs

By:

In early September a urology clinic in Gahanna, Ohio announced plans to build a brand-new 40,000 square-foot facility that will add 89 jobs with a total payroll of about $8 million annually. The Central Ohio Urology Group is building the facility as an extension of their current campus, in a project that will also open up new land for development. The modifications to the area's highway system, needed to accommodate the urology center, also will provide access to the now vacant land.

The plans being laid out by Central Ohio Urology Group are by no means confined to them. All over the country medical facilities are expanding their urology departments and hiring new workers. Just like every other specialty in the medical profession, urology is in dire need of workers to keep up with growing demand. Statistics indicate that the demand is unlikely to subside for the next several years, giving way to new construction projects and more new jobs.

Types of Urology Jobs Available

The most common type of professional in this field is the urologist. The urologist is a medical doctor specializing in the urinary tract of both male and female patients, as well as the male reproductive system. Oftentimes urology will overlap with gynecology for female patients. Where the availability of urology jobs is concerned most openings are related to urologist rather than nurses and other positions.

That's not to say nurses, nurse practitioners, and therapists are not needed in urology. They are. In fact, of the 89 jobs mentioned in the Ohio story above, the vast majority of those workers will be IT professionals, lab technicians, medical assistants, and so forth. It takes an entire team of workers to make any urology practice or department run successfully. So where there is a need for competent urologists there is almost always an accompanying for support staff.

The Issue of Aging Population

As the American population gradually ages, there are some natural consequences in terms of the healthcare industry. This is simply due to the fact that as the body ages it tends to break down. Urology is seeing a greater need for workers simply because an aging population means there is more demand for their services. And since of the urinary tract is so susceptible to infections as we age, the increase in this area is greater than in others.

Another factor driving the availability of urology jobs is the nature of this type of medicine itself. Urology is a field that requires a specific type of doctor that doesn't mind dealing with urinary tract issues. The fact is, proposing urology to a young medical student, as opposed to general practice, is like suggesting to a plumber apprentice the idea of going into septic service. Even though urology is vitally important to the health of patients, it's not a medical profession with a lot of glamour attached.

That said if you're the kind of person intrigued by urology you should have no trouble finding urology jobs upon graduation. You can set up your own practice, work at a hospital or clinic, or sign on with a locum tenens staffing agency.
