Occasions Dresses: The Easy Way To Identify Your Body's Geometric Shape And Find Your Perfect Dress

How is geometry connected to shopping for occasions dresses?
If you thought youd left nasty subjects like math behind when you graduated, then think again.
Many body shapes are actually based upon the balance between geometric shapes so it is important to know which you are before you search for a dress. Are you a triangle or rectangle?

Finding the right dress that flatters your body shape and that makes you look balanced can be tricky, especially if youre unprepared. Lets look at the shapes and which dresses will suit them:

Rectangle
Youre a taller slim shape, quite a straight silhouette without a lot of curves or a strongly defined waistline. The best kind of dress that you can get will help you to add some width to your frame whilst drawing the eye away from your slender profile.
Choose dresses that draw the eye outwards. Ways to do this include a full skirt with volume that goes outwards, any kinds of horizontal details such as a trim on the hemline or ruffles and pleats and an open neckline which will emphasize your shoulders width.
Because your waist is slender you should go for a very fitted waist, maybe a corseted dress will help here.
Avoid vertical lines and trim, these will make you look too skinny and slender.

Triangle
A classic womanly shape, where your hips are the widest point of your body rather than your bust or shoulders.
This is fine, but it can mean that the lower half of your body really dominates your silhouette, so you should choose a dress that gives you some extra width in the top half of your body.
There are two points to consider, creating that width and de-emphasizing your lower bodys size.
To get width you should get a dress with sleeves which will give your shoulders extra width and also choose some detail up top like ruffles that will counterbalance any bulk below.
In order to hide your lower body choose an A-line or Empire waisted dress that will offer you a full skirt that drapes down and mildly outwards rather than hugging your hips. However if your skirt is too bulky, heavy or has heavy detail then this will add bulk to your lower body which is negative, so avoid this.

Hourglass
Youve got width at the bust and hips, but a slim waist. This is the typical bombshell look, but you can suffer from a lack of balance if you arent careful.
The best dress will draw attention to your waistline which is your feature that can be overpowered by your bust and hips, so a strong, fitted waistline which is perhaps decorated will really help.
An A-line dress should work well for you as it will have a waistline which is neither too low nor high and can help to hide your hips. Any tight skirt should be avoided, rather choose a skirt which softly drapes downwards and slightly out and is made of light material like perhaps taffeta.
Any decoration in the upper part of your body should be minimal as again, this will de-emphasize your waist. Rather a beautiful sash would be better decoration.

Inverted Triangle
Your widest point is your shoulders which are broader than your bust and hips, therefore you will need a dress that gives extra width to your lower body.
A bodice dress will always help you as it will take away some upper body width and they look really elegant too.
A full skirt will help you, so dont choose one that hugs your body; rather go for a voluminous skirt (think classic ball-gown style) and also some detail such as lace applique or ruffles which can draw the eye or add extra volume.
A strapless dress will add width to your shoulders, so a better option would be a dress with wide straps, although you can still benefit from a lower neckline as this will also draw the eye downwards away from your shoulders.

Look at yourself in the mirror. What shape are you roughly? Follow these tips and youll see that finding your ideal dress just got easier!

Not sure where to find occasions dresses? Shopping online is a good start, especially if you know roughly which features of a dress will suit you. You will also be able to save a lot of money over stores in town if youre able to wait for delivery.
