Obesity In Children

You need only look around and you will see that there is weight problem in this country not only in adults, but many children are also struggling with issues that pertain to their weight. Years ago a school class of 30 may have had 1 or 2 students that were of an unhealthy weight. That is far from what is the case in today's society.

But why are we in this situation? I think there are several reasons that we are faced with a nation of inactive children that are unhealthy eaters. One of the biggest reasons is the activities that have become popular today. It used to be kids spent time riding their bikes and playing outside when the weather permitted. Now we are faced with a generation of children whose primary activity is looking at a screen.

Cable TV has provided us with hundreds of channels and new release movies just by pushing a button on a remote. The only problem with having all this is that we let it occupy too much of our time. It seems parents no longer put limits on screen time. Children are in front of a computer, video game or television for an excessive amount of hours each day.

It is up to the parents to teach healthy behaviors at a young age and to put limits on things that do not contribute to their health. There is nothing wrong with chicken nuggets and French fries for dinner once a week. It is important to teach kids what is healthy and how to allow themselves to indulge in their favorite foods occasionally. Their whole lives will be about making choices and only you can show them the difference between a good choice and a bad choice.

You also have to be willing to make healthy choices. Making poor choices and expecting your kids to do differently is unrealistic. It is never too late to start. If you have overweight children, start by making small changes. Add an extra vegetable and remove a bread serving. Go for a walk or play in the park. Go for a bike ride with your kids. Make it a group activity. Putting children on a strict diet is not the answer.

Becoming healthy is a process and takes time. Learn what has helped others become healthy and follow their example. There are many programs that are available that can help overweight children. Take the time to find these programs in your community or find ways to make a plan that will work for you and your family.
