Obama Plans To Connect 98% Of The Country Through Wireless Internet

The President hoped to raise 27.8 billion from the open auction of these waves.

Spectrums to be auctioned
Further elaborating the plan, he said that 18 billion will be spent on getting the majority of the country connected to the internet, where the use of smart phones and tablets is increasing tremendously.

The President while acknowledging the success of this project said that he hoped to emulate this throughout the nation. If you can do this in the snowy wilderness of the Upper Peninsula, we can do this throughout America, he said.

With this aim, more radio waves will be handed over to the wireless carriers to strengthen the networks and avoid jams in internet traffic.

The 27 billion raised through these auctions will be spend on the funding new 4G wireless networks and also for a separate mobile communications system for emergency services like fire and police.

The rest of the funds, nearly 10 billion will be used for lowering the Federal deficit in the coming decade.

The plan was first outlined in the State of the Union Speech of the President in which he stressed on the need for reshaping the weakening infrastructure of manufacturing plants and roadways and also called upon to invest more in high speed railways and High speed Internet networks, which, the President said are essential for the country to compete globally.

Broadcasters have expressed hope that the participation in the auction will truly be voluntary. President of National Association of Broadcasters, Gordon Smith said, We arent against the plan but want to make sure that this is truly voluntary, and we want to hold harmless those who dont want to participate.

Small town successful in creating widespread wireless network
The President chose this snow swept college town of Marquette because of the success the town got in rejuvenating the economy, partly aided with the help of internet commerce.

The town was able to attract partners such as Intel to provide mobile broadband network based on the WiMax technology on the campus of the University.

The University of Northern Michigan joined hands with town situated nearby to expand the network of cell towers which will enable the residents including police department and elementary schools to have access to the internet without having a wired connection.

The President while acknowledging the success of this project said that he hoped to emulate this throughout the nation. If you can do this in the snowy wilderness of the Upper Peninsula, we can do this throughout America, he said.
