O.a.r. Tickets - O.a.r. Warms Up To Twitter With Songwriting Contest

O.A.R. frontman Marc Roberge was the first to admit that he was initially weary of succumbing to the Twitter phenomenon that is seemingly taking over the world, but now he and the rest of the roots-rock band are embracing the social media Web site as a new way to reach out to fans. Roberge sat down with Billboard online to talk about the band's first-of-its-kind songwriting contest, which allows fans to Tweet entries, with the winning entry eventually appearing as an exclusive iTunes release in October. "I really kind of got into it with the first idea, 'Wouldn't it be cool if we could just kind of get together with the people and hear what they have to say lyrically?' And then I thought further about it and said, 'If I collected all of these lyrics from these people and wrote music inspired by it, it's truly like an original idea," said Roberge of how the idea for the Twitter songwriting contest evolved.

The O.A.R. frontman continued to say, "I do a lot of co-writing; I like to meet up with songwriters in New York City but I guarantee you there are kids living in Kansas City who don't necessarily have the opportunity to get their lyrics out there. So it's a pretty original idea and a cool way to get together and be inspired by people that keep in touch with us." Check online for O.A.R. tickets to get inspired for the contest with a live show!

O.A.R. is currently touring in support of the band's 2008 album All Sides, which landed at number 13 on Billboard's 200 chart, and they plan on posting video footage on Twitter. "We're going to put up video footage throughout our summer tour so people can follow along and see the (songwriting) process," explained Roberge, "What I wanted to do is keep it as close to realistic as possible. When we get the lyrics and the title together, then we'll really show where we cut drums or write the hooks, or whatever we're doing, we'll be filming and putting it up there." The contest kicked off June 9 and will run through July 7, with fans submitting lyrics (140 characters at a time) to O.A.R.'s Twitter page.

The band, whose moniker stands for Of a Revolution in case you didn't know, will select three winning versus, a chorus and a bridge that will comprise the lyrics of the song. The band hopes that all five songwriting parts will come from different submissions. At that point, fans can submit potential song titles to correspond with the lyrics, and eventually the new O.A.R. track will be sold on iTunes, with proceeds being donated to the band's Heart the World Fund, which provides resources for under-funded youth-oriented and educational programs.

Although the perpetually-touring band will be on the road a lot in the coming months, the singer-guitarist did hint that O.A.R. is working on the follow-up album to All Sides. There is no word yet as to whether the song resulting from the Twitter songwriting contest will appear on the band's forthcoming record, but another new song, "What in the World?," will likely be included in the track listing. Fans with O.A.R. tickets can also expect to hear the saxophone-heavy "What in the World?" on the band's This Town Summer Tour. "We'll be recording a live record here shortly before the next studio record. We just haven't really nailed down where we're going to be recording it yet, but fans can definitely look forward to seeing a live record before the next studio record," Roberge said before adding, "I'd absolutely love to have it out by the holidays."
