Nutritional Supplements For Prostate Health

Traditional herbs and supplements have been used for many years in the management of disorders of the prostate. While herbal and nutritional supplements should never be used as a substitute for regular medical examinations, many men are able to obtain symptomatic relief, particularly from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by using certain supplements, which also have fewer side effects than prescription medications. Examples of herbs and nutrients used to support prostate health include:

* Saw palmetto -- This is a natural herb, which has been clinically shown to decrease the urinary symptoms associated with BPH. A few studies have even shown that it can actually decrease the size of an enlarged prostate. The mechanism of action of saw palmetto is thought to be through its ability to block hormone (testosterone and estrogen) receptor sites and its anti-inflammatory effects.

* Ginger root -- Ginger root has powerful anti-inflammatory effects, and although it has not undergone as much research as saw palmetto, the research is quite convincing that ginger also helps reduce the signs and symptoms of BPH. It may also reduce symptoms associated with impotence.

* Nettle root extract -- Nettle root has been used for centuries. It acts to increase urinary output and has been approved by Germany's Commission E for relieving urinary disorders associated with BPH.

* Pumpkin seed -- Pumpkin seed is also approved for relieving the symptoms of BPH by Germany's Commission E. It appears to be particularly effective, especially when in combination with saw palmetto.

* Pygeum bark extract -- Pygeum bark is from a tree indigenous to tropical and sub-tropical Africa. It decreases frequency of nighttime urination, permits more complete emptying of the bladder, and increases peak urine flow by about 23%.

* Maca root -- Maca root decreases symptoms of BPH and may improve sexual function.

* L-Arginine -- L-Arginine is an essential amino acid, which may play a role in improving sexual function, as well as in enhancing the immune system.

* Green tea leaf -- The active ingredient in green tea is a powerful antioxidant polyphenol compound known as epigallocatechin. This compound may reduce the symptoms of BPH and may play a role in cancer prevention.

* Vitamin E -- Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin, which protects the prostate from oxidative damage by unstable molecules known as free radicals.

* Zinc -- Zinc is an antioxidant mineral, which protects the prostate from oxidative damage.

* Selenium -- This is another antioxidant mineral, which protects the prostate from oxidative damage.

* Beta-sitosterol -- Found in many plants, this is a cholesterol-like compound that belongs to a family of compounds known as plant sterols. Along with saw palmetto, pygeum, and nettle, beta-sitosterol is useful for the management of BPH. It is thought to work by its ability to bind to prostate tissue and by affecting the metabolism of prostaglandins, substances formed in the body that affect pain and inflammation.

* Lycopene -- Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes and pink grapefruit. Like the better-known supplement beta-carotene, lycopene belongs to the family of chemicals known as carotenoids. Lycopene is thought to protect the prostate and may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

There are many herbal supplements that contain some of these ingredients, but look for one that contains as many of these ingredients as possible in order to achieve maximum prostate health.
