No Compromise In The Peugeot Bipper

By: Lawrence White

The Bipper is Peugeots new take on a Light Commercial Vehicle. Released in early 2008, the Peugeot Bipper utilizes the same architecture as the Citroen Nemo and Fiat Fiorino. Voted International Van of the Year 2009 it clearly dominate its class, and for good reason.

Peugeot has made no compromise in creating the Bipper. Measuring 3.86 meters long and 1.79 meters high, with maximum payloads of 610kg it is big enough to handle anything. Yet it manages to stay compact and stylish enough to feel more like driving a car than a van.

The interior is spacious and the passenger seat can easily be folded to make way for goods with extensive lengths. Loading and unloading are made easy with unrestricted access into the car from the rear through two strong pivoted doors, as well as two optional sliding side doors. The rear doors use asymmetric hinges, this allows loading and unloading even in the tightest of spaces.

Designed primarily as an urban transporter, the Bipper focuses itself clearly on that fact. It will never replace a pickup truck and is not going to compete against the likes the Renault Master, but that is exactly the reason it is such an amazing vehicle. It picks one thing and does it better than pretty much any other vehicle available on the road today.

The high power engine is just what you need in bustling town centres. The engine is available either as a 1.4 litre petrol or HDi diesel. Both engines can easily be controlled through the use of either a manual gearbox or an automatic gearbox. Combined with great efficiency even when used for short journeys, and CO2 emissions of as little as 119g/km in the automatic diesel version it is both economical and eco-friendly.

Unlike a transit van, which is renowned for guzzling fuel and being a nightmare to use in urban areas, the Bipper really excels itself. With smooth handling, good traction and a far more convenient size it is exactly the type of LCV needed for urban use.

Even with roof bars it is still small enough to fit under height barriers for underground car parks, something lost to all transit drivers. As anyone who drives in built up urban areas knows, parking is not always easy. In fact the Peugeot Bipper is perfectly balanced, large enough to carry all the goods you need and yet conveniently small and easy to park.

With all the optional extras you would come to expect such as electric windows and additional airbags, the Bipper goes one step further. There are two Option Packs available, the Comfort Pack, with additional drivers seat mobility featuring lumbar sport and armrests or the Tough Pack featuring 15 inch wheel upgrade, raised suspension, front and rear mud flaps, under engine protection tray and washable floor covering for the interior cabin.

The Bipper is Peugeots new take on a light commercial vehicle, and they have held nothing back. Voted International Van of the Year 2009, it clearly distinguishes itself as the forerunner in urban LCV vehicles.
