Nits- Eggs Of Lice

By:

Lice deposit their eggs, known as nits, onto the hair after they feed on the human blood. They attach themselves firmly with a strong glue to the human hair or clothing. There are three different types of lice that can infest humans.

Anybody who has lice wants to get rid of it. Removing nits is the most important action to take. Nits need warmth and high humidity to develop properly. They will die without it. Human skin provides the warmth and high humidity they need to grow. Therefore, nit control is imperative to effective lice control. Lice combs can be used to crush the nits in place. Using nit-loosening lotions can remove the nits without pulling out hair.

Newly hatched lice have a life expectancy of 30 days. They leave their egg shell affixed to hair stalks when they hatch. These shells can be left attached to the hair for weeks or even months. As the hair continues to grow, the shells move further away from the skin. Nits are generally found further than 1/4" away from the skin. In most cases, they're found dead or already hatched.

A louse attaches eggs, or nits, to hair (one egg per strand) using natural glue. Live nits are darker in appearance while empty shells are white. A female louse can attach more than 60 eggs within 10 days after reaching maturity. That is at a rate of about six eggs per day.

First reaction that comes to our mind when we hear about hair lice is a sense of shame which is due to misperception that dirty people have hair lice but this is not true actually. Hair lice survive on small quantity of human blood. These lice lie preferably on scalp, behind the ears and at nape of the neck.

The first and best lice treatment is the use of a specifically prescribed shampoo for that purpose. Once completed, the removal of nits is a necessary secondary lice treatment. If you are uncertain whether lice are still present, try looking with tape, a bright light, or a special comb.
