Niosh N95 Dust Respirators - The Variations Between These And Regular Respirators

By:

The U.S. health department recommends that those who work in places with questionable air quality don N95 respirators in order to prevent them from getting diseases that stem from such places.

N95 masks serve many different purposes. They are not limited to only filtering particulates, but also act as a consistent reminder for the user that the particular surroundings are dangerous. By not even allowing the wearer to touch their mouths with unclean hands, these masks serve an additional protective purpose. With reference to the design of N95 respirators, there exist safety regulations for people working in health care environments regarding recommended face-fit. These regulations are promulgated by NIOSH which is an organization based in the USA and having its head office in the nation's capital, Washington. It's research laboratories are also in the following states: Alabama, New Hampshire and Ohio.

NIOSH is a sub organization of the CDC which is part of the U.S. health department, thus its regulations and standards can be based on reliably. It's this body that publishes standards for the so called NIOSH N95 face respirators which is just a normal particulate mask but is made under the standards regulated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

There is normally a flexible pad that is held in place over the nose and mouth with the help of elastic or even rubber straps so as to protect he or she from inhaling contaminants when working in a hazardous environment such as on a job site. This N95 face respirator is put on in the same way that a paint mask is put on, but one should note the difference as each of them serves a different function, and using one when you should be using the other might expose you to dangers.

It is also critically important to be able to fit your N95 dust masks properly, as failure to do this exposes the wearer to potential risk. Dust respirators are supposed to protect wearers from certain specific dangers only. For example, a dust respirator will not protect the user against chemicals in the form of a vapor. You would protect ones self by wearing a paint respirator, but if you confuse the two and use a dust mask instead of a paint mask, then you're truly exposed to the chemicals.

Regular dust respirators are generally cheaper when compared with conventional masks but may provide the same amount of protection, and may also be less predisposed to misuse. Most dust respiratorshave advancements that incorporate 2 straps behind the head, usually one over the upper part of the head and the other over the lower part of the head with pieces of aluminum that one can fashions in order to achieve a custom fit. There is also foam rubber on the inside of the mask to ensure a better fit even if the aluminum is not able to be fit quite as tightly as it should.

The respirators that incorporate these improvements are subjected to standards put forward by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and are thus referred to as N95 face masks where 'N' implies 'not oil resistant' and the '95' refers to its efficiency which is 95%.
