Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) provide invaluable services, but many people don't realize just how useful these organizations are. That's why so many of them have often struggled to secure funding, even though the idea of offering social services through private organizations is one of the most popular ideas in America. Conservatives often oppose the expansion of the government, which is why NGOs are the perfect vehicle that everyone can appreciate since they're largely privately funded. Funding for these organizations has become particularly weak over the past few years as the economic recession has caused all kinds of traditional funding sources to dry up. Americans are always connected to the internet using it for things like social networking, and NGOs are starting to tap into that. A large amount of NGOs have opened Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and Blogger accounts, and these organizations are using these resources to network online and raise funds. Most people just use social networking sites for personal reasons so they may not even realize how important these resources are for the NGOs who have started using them. For NGOs who use these websites, however, it's become clear that putting additional information on the internet and showing that your organization has popular support from a large number of people has really helped bring in funding. When funders read grant applications, it's really hard for them to get an idea about who the organization is and what they're trying to do because there's only so much information that readers can get from what's been written on paper. But with all of these social networking accounts, people from all over the place are able to log on with their wireless internet connections to show their support for these NGOs, and all of that interaction really helps set these NGOs apart from the rest of the crowd.
