Next Time, Make Your Messages On Hold Script Work Harder

By:

So you just recorded some messages on hold. Great. Its a lot better that making your best prospects think theyve been cut off when put on hold in a blank void. And listening to the radio? If the crazy DJs dont annoy callers, the commercials will! So you made the safe choice.

Everyone puts phone callers on hold, whether they admit it or not. But since you tried to do something about it, do you think that you did everything you could?

Most messages on hold are generic (Your call is very important to us. Please hold on) or done from a template (Your company name, your location, your website, a long list of your products or services, and a few clichs like quality, customer service, the lowest price, fast delivery, free estimates, satisfaction guaranteed, and professional. Take a look at your script. How many of these empty clichs are your callers going to have to listen to?

The job of your messages on hold, and your marketing, is to 1) Get the prospects attention 2) Inform your prospect that you have a solution to the problem, and 3) Offer an easy step so they can get the complete details they want, so they can make the right decision: buying from you.

Next time, when youre writing your script (most businesses that record messages on hold either make you do it, or provide so little help that you end up doing it anyway) remember some of the basics (a series of short messages, a short pause between messages lets callers think about what theyve heard, avoid clichs, talk the way your customer talks and avoid industry jargon, etc.), and then make your messages on hold script work harder (focus on caller hot buttons, think about the potential for upselling and add-on sales, consider seasonal uses for your product or service, demonstrate how youre different from your competition, etc.). The extra effort will result in happier callers (both prospects and existing clients) and longer term profits.
