Newborn Baby Bonding

Wow! The nine month wait is over! Your new baby is finally here! Now what? You can scarcely imagine that you have brought this new life into the world. You want the best for your baby! You have brought a new person into this world, and you will be accountable for shaping their life. That is a tremendous responsibility! Everything starts with the bonding that you establish with your baby. Bonding is one of the really important things that parents can do for their child. Your newborn employs all of its senses to bond with you. Here are some tips to help:

Vision/Sight: Newborns eyesight is not good. It can focus up to about 10 inches away. That is fine for their needs now. You may be surprised to know that studies shows that your newborn would prefer to look at you, instead of some brightly colored objects. So, make sure that you are close enough for your baby to view you. A great time to do this is when you feed the newborn. Let them explore your face with their little hands, and make eye contact with them.

Tactile or Touch: One of the most substantially developed senses in your newborn is touch. It is vital to make them feel safe and secure. So, cuddle and stroke your baby! Infants may actually learn better when they are massaged, according to studies. Do not worry if you are doing it right, just do it! Place your newborn in a Snugly, and take them around with you while you do your tasks. Listening to your heartbeat may put your newborn right to sleep!

Auditory or Their Hearing: A newborn is enthused by a mothers voice. Mothers tend to talk to their newborns in a higher tone, using calming expressions. Say your newborns name, coo and sing to them. You can make a fool of yourself, and they like to hear it!

Smell: Research indicates that your newborn knows your scent. This recognizable smell soothes your newborn.

Remember that your baby is a unique person, and all individuals are distinctive. Don't overwhelm or over stimulate your baby. Your child may give you signals that they are tired of play or stimulation, such as yawning, frowning, rubbing their eyes, breaking eye contact or squirming away. This may show that they are eager for rest time.

Experts now recommend that babies sleep only on their backs. A condition known as "occipital plagiocephaly of positional origin" may result from sleeping only on the back. This simply means that the infants head is flatter on one side than the other from always lying in the same position. Giving your baby some "tummy time" can help to avoid this condition. During play time is an ideal time to do this. When your baby is on their tummy, they will push themselves up using their arms, or lift their heads, which is helpful for boosting their muscles. Get down with your infant, and smile, stick your tongue out, laugh and sing to them. Hold a mirror up to baby, and observe their response! Move brightly colored items in front of their eyes, and see them track movement. This is a great way to bond with your baby.

Don't leave out Dad! Because Mom has borne the newborn for 9 months, there is already a physical, biochemical bond before the child is even born. Lots of times fathers feel left out. Involve Dad in Dr. appointments, and the pre-natal care of baby. Have him feed baby whenever possible. Dad can be included, even if Mom is breastfeeding. Moms can take a rest, and let Dad take charge of a crying infant from time to time. Changing diapers, bathing and dressing newborn are all tasks that Dad can assist with. During this time, Dad can participate in the touching and cuddling, cooing, and everything else that Moms typically do. The good news is that as baby becomes older, they need more stimuli, and Dads are wonderful at providing that. Dad should also be involved in play and "tummy" time.

Showing off the new baby to friends and family is an added benefit. Your family and friends will bond with the infant as well, and babies love all of that attention! So take pleasure in the attention that your baby creates.

Doesn't matter what methods you use to bond with baby, keep in mind, it is the experience that counts the most. Just a soft touch, simple smile, or laughing together, will help parents place their child on the track toward a favorable future, and happy life.
