New York Yankees - Get In Line, It's Arbitration Time!

Seems like it just isn't good enough that the New York Yankees avoided arbitration this year by signing Chien-Ming Wang to a $5 million contract for one year. No sir, especially not when it comes to the likes of Melky Cabrera, Xavier Nady and Brian Bruney. Turns out these three have added their name to a list of more than 100 players who have salary arbitration filings.

Maybe $3.35 million dollars in a year just doesn't go as far as it should. Even though Nady's on the roster for Spring Training, it seems there was no big rush to deal Nick Swisher or Nady. Most pressing of the three, it appears, is Nady, who will be a free agent at the end of the 2009 season.

If you don't know what all the commotion is about, right at the trade deadline, 30-year old Nady joined the Yankees last season and was virtually an overnight hit, or should we say hitter? Straight off, Nady batted. 268 with 40 RBIs and 12 home runs with the Yankees in 59 games.

They say all good things come to an end and they may be right because Bruney's stroke of good luck came to an end when he suffered an injury to his left foot after striking out 33 in 34 1/3 innings and walking 16 in just 32 appearances during last season. After a stint in rehab, Bruney came back in August and earned $725,000 for the year. Bruney will be 27 in February.

Not that age is a factor when it comes to talent because it isn't. But the youngest of the threesome to join the arbitration merry go round is 24-year old Cabrera who sprung up and out of the gate on Opening Day as the center fielder but managed to get demoted to Triple-A after an aggrevatedly offensive season. For batting .249 with 37 RBIs and 8 home runs out of 129 games played, Cabrera brought home $461,200 last year.

The Yankees managed a win over Wang last year when right-handed Wang sought $4.6 million but was paid $4 million instead. January 20 will mark the occasion when the exchange of salary arbitration figures takes place. After the exchange, arbitration hearings will begin on February 1 and last until February 21.

In the meantime, the countdown to Opening Day continues its wind down to the April 16 start when the Yankees will take on the Cleveland Indians at home. Fans can also expect the Yankees to commence their Spring Training down in Tampa, Florida at the George M. Steinbrenner Field with a nice mixture of both home and away games beginning on March 1 and lasting the entire month with a game every night except for March 12 and March 25.

Sounds like there's going to be quite a bit going on with the Yankees both inside and outside the cages.
