New Years Resolutions For Leaders

New Years Resolutions For Leaders

By:

Most of us make New Years resolutions, whether its a personal resolution like losing weight or stopping a bad habit, but its also important for leaders of companies to make resolutions that will improve their businesses. Trouble is, many of these resolutions are forgotten by February. Businesses cant thrive on intention alone. They need leaders to create a compelling vision based on the core values of the organizationwhat drives the purpose and the mission.

As the year draws to a close, leaders need to take some time to focus on what they want to achieve next year. They need to ask themselves what they will do in the New Year to inspire their team to be fully engaged with the mission, vision, strategy, and goals of the company.

Here are eight leadership resolutions for the New Year:
Create a clear vision for the business. Focus on the big picture first and then the actions you will need to take to make the big picture a reality. Clarity of vision inspires you and your employees to take giant leaps forward.
Be self-aware. Pay attention to your thought processes and the reasons you took specific actions. Imagine what is possible and then change your thinking to believe the dreams you have for your business will come to pass.
Think big. What could be the best thing to happen to your business this year? Create an ambitious but manageable plan and remember to set goals in writing. Writing down goals creates accountability and keeps you on track.
Take care of yourself. You cant be an effective leader for your team if you dont invest in your own personal growth. Take time each day to learn something new. Read books, blogs, articles, etc. to promote your continued improvement and inform your business decisions.
Be resilient. Your team will look to you to bounce back and recover from adversity. When things arent going well, be positive and emphasize accomplishments. Lead by example and have an attitude that anything is possible. Your positivity will be infectious to your employees.
Plan, plan, plan. Wishing for something good to happen to your company is about as effective as a resolution to shed some pounds if you never go to the gym. Surround yourself with open-minded thinkers who will help you stay focused and support your goals. Create a strategic plan and revisit it daily.
Be an expert. You know your business and your industry inside and out. Why not build your brand by guest blogging on industry websites? You will establish yourself as an expert and provide some free marketing for your company.
Be thankful. Your employees want to be rewarded for their contributions, both economically and emotionally. Be mindful of their hard work and thank them for the specific ways they help improve the business.

Inspire yourself and your team to stick to New Years resolutions. Be clear. Be positive. Be grateful. Be a leader. Make sure everyone knows your goals and take daily actions to achieve each goal. Learn from the past, celebrate successes, and forge ahead with a plan that is ambitious and achievable.
