New Lexus Versus Bmw

Comfort, speed and fuel efficiency: three words that do not always go together, but that the new Lexus models are determined to combine. The Japanese car maker is looking to refresh its image. However, it faces tough competition from BMW, Audi and Ford.

First up is the new Lexus HS 250s. It is a full hybrid capable of travelling on electrical power alone and that shows in terms of fuel efficiency. However, it can still manage 0-60 in about eight seconds. It might not be as powerful as full petrol models, but if you're looking for a hybrid then this is more than enough.

However the biggest thing you notice about this car is the sheer army of technological aids and gadgets you can have come with it. Many of these are options, but if you're not careful when it comes to ordering then you could find yourself lumbered with the Star Ship Enterprise. Among the more eye-catching features to come with this model are cruise control technology that maintains constant distance with the car in front, back up camera and a lane assist which spots when you stray out of a lane without indicating. If you do, then it gives the steering wheel a gentle nudge and puts you back on line.

Meanwhile, at the Geneva Motor Show the world is waiting to get its first look of the new Lexus CT 200h. This is a new full hybrid aimed at the premium hatchback market.

The company hopes it has stolen a march on its rivals, but they are certainly not resting on their laurels. Heading the high performance hybrid market is BMW's EfficientDynamics system. There is a big push on this front as the Bavarian manufacturer seeks to promote its collection of awards for efficiency.

Audi also is bringing out its own hybrid, the Q5, which is set to be on sale in 2011. It is, as you'd expect, a high performance luxury model intent on satisfying the demands of a greener age with those of its core executive clientele. It is a lucrative market and even the Americans want to get in on the act. The US giant is working hard on improving the hybrid version of the Escape, but with so many developments in the offing it is at risk of looking a little tired.

The new Lexus cars, therefore, offer great hope to the Japanese manufacturer, but they won't be celebrating just yet. Ford, BMW, Audi and many more are pushing into this sector and given the recent troubles of parent company Toyota, it won't be easy convincing customers to head their way. Even so, the new collection of cars signals a change of direction in the automotive market - one that will certainly please the environmentalists.
