Never Use A Zippo To Light A Cigar

By:

Lighting a cigar is a confusing prospect. There is so much conflicting advice out there that you can quickly become bewildered. However, if you're wondering if you can use a Zippo to light your cigar, the answer is, "yes, but why would you want to?" Zippos and other lighters that make use of ordinary lighter fluid are fine for flame production, but they can produce noxious tastes and odors that can taint your cigar. A better option is to make use of a torch lighter that uses butane. What happens when you use a Zippo lighter to fire up a cigar?

Lighter fluid has many different impurities, each of which has an odor or even a taste. When you place the flame from your Zippo against the foot (the open end) of the cigar and draw the flame to the tobacco, these tastes and odors flow up the air stream directly into your mouth. However, you will also find that they can impregnate the tobacco, turning an enjoyable experience into something less so. However, when you use a butane torch lighter, you can avoid this problem. Butane has fewer impurities (some brands have almost none), which translates to fewer additional odors and tastes in your tobacco.

If you want to avoid any taste at all, use a wooden match or a cedar shaving. However, if you opt to go the route of matches, you'll have to follow a few basic steps, as well. For instance, the head of a match has sulfur in it. This, combined with other chemicals, is what allows your match to flare into life (and also gives you that burnt-match smell). After you strike your match, allow the sulfur to burn away before placing the flame against the foot of your cigar. Of course, a better option is to use a torch lighter to light a cedar shaving. Hold the shaving as you would a match and light your cigar. You will find that there is no additional taste or smell imparted to your smoke.

When enjoying a cigar, it's best to leave the Zippo alone and follow the advice given here. Opt instead for a torch lighter or matches. You will find that you enjoy that smoke much more without the added chemical tastes from your lighter fluid-fueled Zippo lighter and that you are able to taste a much wider range of flavors from the tobacco.
