One of the best known modes of outdoor advertising that appears appealing and attractive despite night or day is the Neon lights advertising. These popular lighting is known as the liquid fire among people and add to the attraction of any caf, restaurant, departmental stores and many other sources of business, as they tend to attract more customers, who can read these signs clearly, thus are saved from the hunt of finding the apt places for themselves. One might have noticed these signs almost everywhere around us be it a mall, sign board or other venues.
The neon lights lamps were first discovered around 1900 once several successful experiments were conducted and many types of vapor lamps and discharge lamps were invented in the Europe and the United States. These lamps are also known as the electric discharge lamp which include a transparent tube like container in which the gas is induced in the tube and applied pressure and voltage, thus resulting in a glow. Once these lamps were patented for manufacturing, the, markets were flooded with the customers who demanded the neon light lamps, which took the world by a storm. By the year 1923, a French company introduced the neon light advertising in the Los Angeles markets selling off the neon signs to a car dealer company, which read as the Packard.
The first neon light lamps were offered to the public in the year 1910 on the 11th of December in Paris.
Neon gas is a rare gas found in the mixture of the air that needs to be extracted with the help of a special process, which includes both liquefaction of air and the distillation of the extract, to get this unique gas in a suitable amount. The neon gas presence is marked as 1 in 65,000 elements of air. The word neon is derived from a Greek word which stands for the new gas.
In the recent era, a neon sign can be made very easily with the help of neon lamps measuring four, five and even eight feet in length. In order to shape the tubes in the required forms, they are heated. The glass used for the manufacturing of the neon gas tubes can be soft glass constituting lead glass etc. or the hard glass made from borosilicate family.
The neon gas produces red color, even at the atmospheric pressure. However, due to the advancement in the modern technology, up to one hundred and fifty colors in neon can be produced. One of the first colors to be discovered were blue, which involved the use of Mercury, followed by white using carbon dioxide, gold involving Helium and a lot more with the use of phosphorous in different ratios.
