Neckline

Neckline

As with the silhouette, color, fabric, and pattern, the cut of a neckline is an extremely important consideration when choosing a designer dress. Once youve determined the shape of your face, as well as the best silhouette for your shape, it is possible to narrow down the field of potential designer dresses according to the neckline that suits you perfectly.

Scoop Neck
Shaped like a wide U with the opening spanning from shoulder-to-shoulder, the scoop neck is an elegant cut that elongates the neck and accentuates the collarbones. Very complimentary for a well-endowed woman, the scoop neck is not a good choice for a designer dress if you have a long neck or an exceptionally bony chest area. However, if you love to accessorize, this is the neckline for youthe scoop neck looks amazing with jewelry!

V-Neck
In the v-neck cut, the point of the V sits at the center of the chest, where the diagonal lines from the shoulders meet. Often the V is made less risqu by truncating the neckline into a trapezoid. With its emphasis on dcolletage, this neckline is not flattering for bony chests, women with narrow shoulders or those with extremely long necks. Depending upon the depth of the V, this can be an extremely revealing look! Accessorize with a delicate necklace or chain.

Sweetheart Neckline
Resembling the top half of a heart, the sweetheart neckline has straight (linear) sides and a curved bottom seam. A designer dress with a sweetheart neckline may be strapless, have straps, or have sleeves. This neckline is best for an hourglass shape, but can be too revealing if your bust is large. Chokers compliment the sweetheart neckline extremely well.

Halter Neckline
The halter actually refers to straps that extend from the dress and wrap behind the neck. The neckline of a halter designer dress can be any one of a number of neckline cuts, including sweetheart, horizontal or V-neck. If you have wide shoulders, the halters converging lines will make them appear smaller. Not a good choice for busty figures, the halter accentuates the bust and makes it appear more ample. This neckline is perfect for smaller, well-toned figures. Limit accessories to earrings and braceletsnecklaces will tend to look cluttery with the halter straps.

Boat/Bateau/Sabrina Neckline
The boat neckline skims the collar bones, joining the sleeves directly over or very close to the shoulders. The Sabrina neckline is not a good choice for a woman with broad shoulders or a square body shape, but can nicely balance a pear-shaped woman with small breasts. Accessorize with a delicate necklace or a short strand of pearls with complimentary (or matching) earrings; a pair of chandelier earrings (with no necklace) is also a nice choice.

Square Neckline
Forming a box with a horizontal line that travels across and just below the collarbones, the square neckline has vertical lines that travel straight-up and over each shoulder. Flattering on most bodies and face shapes, a designer dress with a square neckline is the perfect way for a well-endowed woman to accentuate her curves while remaining classy. A string of pearls would be a classic accessory choice with this neckline.

Strapless
Perhaps one of the more popular necklines for an evening designer dress, the strapless neckline bottom can vary: sweetheart, horizontal (bandeau), etc. Properly fitted, the strapless dress hugs your ribcage, accentuating (or forming) an hourglass shape. Not the best for extremely busty or exceptionally small-chested women, the strapless dress looks great with a choker or chandelier earrings.

One-Shoulder or Asymmetric Neckline
As varied as the designers imagination can conceive, the asymmetric (one-shoulder) neckline is dramatic and, depending upon the cut, can be worn by any body type. The bottom of the neckline of a one-shoulder style runs from under one arm, across the chest and over the opposite shoulder. Best left to itself, no accessories are required with either a one-shoulder or an asymmetric neck, which provide enough drama on their own.
