A large colony of blue, white and gray penguins known as Little Penguins standing only about 13 inches tall, have made Phillip Island their permanent home and Summerland Beach their biggest burrowing site turning it into one of Australias best known wildlife attractions. Visitors can watch the worlds smallest penguins going about their business in their natural habitat from a range of environment friendly viewing stands and boardwalks set out along Summerland Beach to give the best possible wildlife experience. For those interested in getting a really close view of the penguins nighttime activities, the latest night vision technology is at their disposal to take a peek into the penguins burrows. For further interaction, visitors can assist rangers to count the penguins that cross the beach to work out the annual rate of penguins returning to their burrows.
In March 2011, Phillip Island celebrated the 80th year of its Penguin Parade. The parade was not always what it is now. Since the 1920s when the concept of a penguin parade was first mooted, much work had to be done to safeguard the Little Penguin colony on Phillip Island from over curious humans, vermin and destruction of their natural habitat. Since the mid 1980s concerted efforts were made to save, develop and safeguard Phillip Islands penguin habitats so that there is currently a population of about 26,000 Little Penguins on the Island with around 4,000 of them having their burrows on Summerland Beach. Now one of natures most primordial events have a devoted following and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
